9 ex-MPs overstaying in official bungalows

Nine former members of parliament (MPs) including YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is taking on the Congress in Andhra Pradesh, are “unauthorisedly” occupying government bungalows and have failed to pay Rs 63 lakh rental dues that they owe the government.

The urban development (UD) ministry, the custodian of government bungalows, has revealed this in response to an RTI application filed by Subhash Chandra Aggarwal.

The biggest defaulter in the list is former Congress MP G Venkatswamy. He has not vacated the 7-B Janpath bungalow even after his term in the 14th Lok Sabha ended. Venkatswamy owes Rs 29 lakh as rent to the UD ministry. http://www.hindustantimes.com/images/HTPopups/311011/31_10_pg14a.jpg

Sources said the bungalow is occupied by Venkatswamy’s son G Vivekanand, an MP from Andhra Pradesh. As a first time MP, Vivekanand is not entitled to such an accommodation. The UD ministry has requested the ex-MP to clear his dues. Despite repeated attempts, Venkatsw amy and his son failed to respond.

Former Congress MP Jagdish Tytler owes Rs 19 lakh as rent to the government. He is staying at the 3-GRG Road bungalow. UD ministry officials said they had initiated eviction proceedings under the P.P. Act, 1971 to get the bungalow vacated. Tytler was not available for comment.

Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is  occupying the 26, Lodhi Estate bungalow and  owes Rs 3 lakh as rent. Former Congress MP Devwrat Singh is occupying the 187, North Avenue bungalow and owes Rs 1,7 lakh.  Former BJP MP Sangita Kumari Singhdeo owes Rs 7.39 lakh to the government as rent.
