Wikipedia plans to expand its India content this year. The CEO of the online encyclopedia, Jimmy Wales, told The Economic Times of India on Sunday that it hired people in India to conduct research and outreach exercises.
“This year our focus has been India,” he told the paper. “We have a
few people on the ground in India…helping to solve technical questions,
helping with outreach to universities, helping with PR (and) letting the
public know that Wikipedia exists in all those Indian languages,” he
said on the sidelines of the World Innovation Summit for Education
taking place in Qatar this weekend.
Wales said Wikipedia was carrying out pilot studies in India and
intends to use the learning experience gathered from there in other
regions as well.
According to Alexa.com, Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world when ranked by traffic to the site.
